Health Insurance and the Immigration Medical Exam

The immigration medical examination is a self-pay service. Health insurance — including private insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid — is generally not accepted for immigration medical examinations.

This is standard practice across immigration medical exam clinics because the examination is required by USCIS for immigration purposes, not for the diagnosis or treatment of a medical condition. Most health insurance plans do not cover services that are not medically necessary for treatment purposes.

Why Insurance Does Not Cover the Exam

Health insurance plans are designed to cover medically necessary care — diagnosis and treatment of illness or injury. Because the immigration medical exam is required for immigration purposes rather than for medical treatment, it falls outside the scope of most health insurance coverage.

Some flexible spending accounts (FSA) or health savings accounts (HSA) may cover immigration medical examination costs. FSA and HSA accounts are tax-advantaged accounts that can be used for certain qualified medical expenses.
