What Laboratory Tests Are Required for My Immigration Medical Exam?

Quick Answer

The standard laboratory panel for the USCIS immigration medical examination includes testing for syphilis, gonorrhea, and tuberculosis (IGRA blood test). Additional testing may be ordered based on your medical history, physical examination findings, or country of origin. All laboratory testing is performed on-site at our clinic.

Standard Laboratory Panel

The USCIS immigration medical examination requires a standard laboratory panel for all eligible applicants. The core tests include:

  • Syphilis serology (required for applicants 15 and older)
  • Gonorrhea testing (required as part of the standard panel)
  • Tuberculosis — IGRA (interferon-gamma release assay) blood test

TB Testing: IGRA vs. Tuberculin Skin Test

The IGRA blood test is the preferred method for TB screening in the immigration medical examination. It requires a single blood draw and does not require a return visit for reading. In some circumstances, a tuberculin skin test (TST) may be used instead. Your civil surgeon will determine the appropriate test for your situation.

Additional Testing That May Be Required

Based on your medical history, physical examination findings, or country of origin, the civil surgeon may order additional laboratory tests. These may include chest X-ray (for TB evaluation), additional blood work, or other diagnostic tests.

If additional testing is required, our staff will explain what is needed and why. All standard testing is performed on-site; some specialized tests may require an outside laboratory.

On-Site Laboratory Convenience

All standard immigration laboratory tests are performed on-site at our Costa Mesa clinic. You do not need to visit a separate laboratory or schedule additional appointments for routine testing. This streamlines the process and helps ensure your Form I-693 is completed as quickly as possible.
