IGRA Blood Test Processing Time

The IGRA (QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus) blood test requires laboratory processing. After your blood is drawn at our clinic, the sample is sent to our laboratory partner for analysis. Results are typically available within 2 to 3 business days.

This processing time is built into our standard Form I-693 completion timeline. In most cases, applicants with a negative IGRA result can expect their completed Form I-693 to be ready within approximately 3 business days of their appointment.

What Happens If Your TB Test Is Positive

If your IGRA result is positive, additional evaluation is required before Form I-693 can be completed. Our civil surgeon will contact you to discuss the result and order a chest X-ray if clinically indicated.

The chest X-ray adds additional time to the process — typically 1 to 2 business days for the X-ray to be taken and the radiology report to be returned. Once the civil surgeon has reviewed all results, Form I-693 can be finalized. In most cases involving a positive IGRA with a normal chest X-ray, the total process takes approximately 5 to 7 business days.

Factors That May Affect Processing Time

Several factors can affect how long it takes to complete your immigration TB screening and Form I-693:

• Positive IGRA result requiring chest X-ray evaluation
• Indeterminate IGRA result requiring repeat testing
• Abnormal chest X-ray requiring further evaluation or sputum testing
• Laboratory delays (uncommon but possible)
• Need for additional clinical evaluation or specialist referral

Planning Your Immigration Timeline

When planning your immigration application timeline, allow at least 5 to 7 business days from your immigration medical exam appointment to receive your completed Form I-693, assuming no complications. If you have a known history of positive TB tests or prior TB disease, allow additional time for the evaluation process.

Form I-693 has a validity period — it must be submitted to USCIS within a certain timeframe after completion. Our staff will advise you on the validity period and help you plan accordingly.
