How Age Affects Vaccine Requirements

Immigration vaccine requirements follow the ACIP immunization schedule, which is age-based. This means that some vaccines are only required for certain age groups. Older applicants may be exempt from some vaccines that are required for younger applicants, while also having additional age-specific requirements.

Vaccines Generally Not Required for Older Applicants

Based on ACIP age recommendations, the following vaccines are generally not required for older applicants:

• HPV vaccine — generally not required for applicants over age 26
• Rotavirus vaccine — only required for infants
• Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b) — primarily required for young children
• PCV13/PCV15 for children — different schedule applies for adults

Additional Vaccines Required for Seniors

While seniors may be exempt from some vaccines, they also have additional age-specific requirements:

• Pneumococcal vaccines (PCV15/PCV20 and PPSV23) — for adults 65 and older
• Shingles (Shingrix/zoster) — two-dose series for adults 50 and older
• High-dose or adjuvanted influenza — recommended for adults 65 and older

The civil surgeon will apply the correct ACIP age-appropriate schedule to your specific situation. You will not be required to receive vaccines that are outside the recommendations for your age group.
