The Sealed Envelope Requirement

After completing your immigration medical exam, the civil surgeon places Form I-693 in an envelope, seals it, and signs across the seal. This sealed envelope is the official submission package for your medical exam results.

You must not open the sealed envelope under any circumstances. An opened envelope renders Form I-693 invalid, and you will need to undergo a new immigration medical exam. USCIS will not accept a Form I-693 that has been removed from the sealed envelope.

Three Ways to Submit Form I-693

There are three ways to submit Form I-693 to USCIS:

• 1. With your Form I-485 package — submit the sealed envelope along with your initial I-485 filing
• 2. By mail to USCIS — mail the sealed envelope to the USCIS office handling your case after receiving a request
• 3. At your USCIS interview — bring the sealed envelope to your adjustment of status interview

Submitting With Form I-485

If you choose to submit Form I-693 with your Form I-485 package, place the sealed envelope inside the I-485 package without opening it. USCIS will open the envelope when processing your case.

This approach is convenient but carries a risk: if your case is delayed and Form I-693 expires before adjudication, you may need to submit a new form. Discuss this timing risk with your immigration attorney.

Bringing Form I-693 to Your Interview

Many applicants choose to bring Form I-693 to their USCIS interview rather than submitting it earlier. This approach ensures the form is as fresh as possible at the time of adjudication.

If you bring Form I-693 to your interview, the USCIS officer will open the sealed envelope at the interview. Keep the sealed envelope in a safe place until your interview date.

What If USCIS Requests Form I-693 by Mail?

In some cases, USCIS may send a Request for Evidence (RFE) or other notice requesting that you submit Form I-693 by mail. Follow the instructions in the RFE carefully, including the mailing address and any deadline. Mail the sealed envelope in a larger envelope — do not open the civil surgeon's sealed envelope.
