Why TB Testing Affects the Timeline

The tuberculin skin test (TST) — also called the Mantoux test or PPD test — is placed during your first visit. You must return to the office 48–72 hours later to have the test read by the civil surgeon. This return visit is required before Form I-693 can be completed.

If you use the IGRA blood test for TB screening (which is done in a single visit), the return visit for TST reading is not required. However, IGRA results typically take 1–3 business days to come back from the laboratory.

Other Factors That Can Affect Timing

Other factors that can affect how quickly you receive Form I-693 include: laboratory results for blood tests (typically 1–3 business days), chest X-ray results (if required), and any additional evaluation needed for unexpected findings.

If the civil surgeon identifies a finding that requires additional evaluation — such as a positive TB test that requires a chest X-ray — the timeline may be longer. The civil surgeon will inform you of any additional steps needed.

What Happens at the Pickup

When you pick up Form I-693, the civil surgeon's office will give you the completed form in a sealed envelope. The envelope is sealed with the civil surgeon's signature and stamp across the seal — this is required by USCIS.

Do not open the envelope. The sealed envelope must be submitted to USCIS intact. If the envelope is opened or tampered with, USCIS will not accept it and you will need to undergo a new examination.
